The men run and help pushing the “candil”
– the “Arte Xávega” boat – to the sea. With the strength of the oars they pass the waves and launch
the nets to the firsts buoys. At the beach remain the ones who will help pull in the ropes. Everybody helps pull in the nets,
the joy appears and the effort wins enthusiasm traces when the fish jumps and shines on the beach. This was the history of
the days at the Nazaré beach. Nowadays it is still at the beach that fishermen mend their nets, tell the fishing episodes
and prepare the gear for fishing. Afterwards when the golden light of the sun embraces the wide sea landscape, from the houses
to the Promontory of Sítio that flows into Pedra Guilhim, the streets and esplanades gain life to receive with a festive air
the happy and lively night of Nazaré. Nowadays the surf and bodyboards slide through the waves while others swim and children
play. But, at the Avenida Marginal one can still see the women in black line up mackerel, and sometimes dogfish, to dry on
fish wracks. The delights of the beach are tempting and the sun adds its touch of gold. The sand is soft and sea, loaded with
iodine essence begins blue in the morning. At sunset, from the houses of the Promontory of Sítio that flow into Pedra do Guilhim,
the streets and esplanades become alive. Restaurants and cafés light up to festive and lively nights of typical gastronomy
dishes of fresh fishes and shellfish. For a small adventure, go up to Sítio by using the lift and enjoy the view. Visit the
Sanctuary of N.ª Sr.ª da Nazaré, the Museum Dr. Joaquim Manso, the Chapel of Ermida da Memória that tells the legend of D.
Fuas Roupinho saved from falling into the sea by a miracle of Our Lady of Nazaré.
