Why do I need a Portuguese bank account?

It is often convenient when buying a property in Portugal to have a Portuguese bank account. This way you can transfer your money directly from your international account to your Portuguese account and then make the payments (deposit; taxes; final payment) with a Portuguese cheque.

Also, when making the final payment for a property the seller will often ask you for a ‘CHEQUE VISADO’; this is nothing more than a cheque marked by a Portuguese bank to guarantee that the cheque is valid.

* To open a Portuguese bank account you will need a Fiscal number; so make sure you create one before trying to open a bank account.

Portuguese banks normally ask for the following documents when opening a new account:

- Passport

- Fiscal number

- Proof of address (if living in U.K., for example, that’s the address they ask for)

- Birth certificate

- Proof of your job or retirement
